Please join us for the Yale Club of Hartford’s Annual Meeting on Tuesday, May 17, 2022 at the Hartford Golf Club. Our guest speaker will be Professor Lisa Messeri from Yale’s Department of Anthropology who will discuss recent developments in virtual reality technology from an anthropological perspective.
Prof. Messeri studies the places where technology and science are produced and how scientists and engineers build new worlds through their research and innovations. Her current research focuses on the virtual reality industry and the potential for the application of this technology to do more harm than good. As she noted in a recent article in Wired magazine, “In [Meta CEO Mark] Zuckerberg’s hands, the vision of sociality, community, and experience existing on this frontier will be devastatingly limited and…inevitably structured by harm.” To see the full article, click here.
Prof. Messeri is a 2021 recipient of the Poorvu Family Fund for Academic Innovation award, which recognizes excellence in innovative teaching among Yale’s junior faculty. For a recent announcement about the award and for more detail on Professor Messeri's work, click here.
We will also be electing a new group of members to serve on the Board of Directors, and a new slate of officers of the Yale Club of Hartford.
Cost to attend is $30 per person. The meeting will be held at the Hartford Golf Club, 134 Norwood Road, West Hartford, CT 06117. Cocktails will start at 5:30 pm, dinner at 6:15 pm, and Prof. Messeri will speak at 7 pm. Dress is business casual. Masks are optional. Please come with questions to make this an interactive event.
