Yale Club of Hartford 140th Anniversary Celebration

We have a BIG milestone right around the corner for our Club, and we hope you’re excited to celebrate with us!  Join us at the Mark Twain House on Tuesday, April 8 from 6-8 PM for our 140th Anniversary Celebration!

We’ll be celebrating with complimentary food and a cash bar. 🥳🥂  We’ll also have photos and memorabilia from throughout our past which will be on display during the evening at the Mark Twain House, a venue purposefully chosen given how closely Samuel Clemens engaged with our Club in our earliest years (read on to find out more about our Club’s connection with the author!).  And for anyone curious to find out more about the stories, achievements, and anecdotes that have dotted our rich past, a few of us will be happy to share more if asked!

Simply put:  come join us for a drink and a quick bite after work on April 8th, and be part of celebrating our Club’s vibrant 140 year history as we look ahead to what’s next!

Hope to see you there on April 8th!

Founding of the Yale Club of Hartford

Almost 140 years ago ‒ in 1885, just one day after April 8th ‒ what was then still called The Hartford Daily Courant published an article about “The Yale Alumni,” reporting there was a “A Very Large Meeting Last Night ‒ An Association Formed.”  Those of our alumni who joined that evening shared their vision for an organization they believed would become “a good thing for Hartford and for Yale.”  After adopting a Constitution at the very first meeting, our Club got started!

Our history is richer and more intertwined with those of Yale and Connecticut than is often realized!  In the 1920s, our Club committed itself to helping Yale invest in its early science and engineering programs.  In the 1930s, our Club helped Yale raise significant funds to offset the effects of the depression.  In the decades both before and after World War II, our Club would frequently host concerts with the Yale Glee Club and Whiffenpoofs at the Bushnell and elsewhere to help fund much needed scholarships for deserving Yale students from Connecticut in a largely pre-financial-aid world.  And very early on, Mark Twain / Samuel Clemens often sought out our Club as a place to engage with others around his ideas and writing, and spoke to our Club on several occasions. Ourr events have featured more than ten of Connecticut’s Governors and Lieutenant Governors ‒ many of them Club members themselves ‒ and most Yale Presidents inaugurated since our Club was founded in 1885 have joined our events.

We hope you’ll join us on April 8th as we celebrate our Club’s rich history!

Event Recording:

Join us on Wednesday, March 19 at 7 pm ET for a talk on the war in Ukraine with distinguished journalist Jim Brooke YC '77.  This event will be hosted online via Zoom.

The war in Ukraine is now three years on.  What’s the situation and future for Ukraine?

Jim worked for 24 years as a staff reporter for The New York Times, with many reporting assignments to Russia. After leaving the Times in 2006, he worked in Moscow for eight years, including stints as Bloomberg Bureau Chief and then Voice of America (VOA) Bureau Chief.  He worked for six years as a journalist in Kyiv. In September 2021, he returned to his native New England.  Jim writes twice a week on Russia-Ukraine for The New York Sun.

The webinar is free. We suggest a donation of $10 or more to support Ukrainian refugees who are relocating to Connecticut.  We will forward contributions to Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services (IRIS), a non-profit that supports refugees and asylum seekers and is based in New Haven.  For more information on IRIS, go to www.irisct.org.

Hartford “All-Ivy” Winter 2025 Night at the Museum

With the holidays now behind us, lots of us are looking for a winter reprieve!  What better way to spend a winter's night after work next month than at a cocktail reception for our Hartford "All-Ivy" community at one of Greater Hartford's top arts and culture spots?

On Thursday, January 23rd from 5:30-7:30 PM, our Hartford "All-Ivy" group will have private access to the New Britain Museum of American Art (56 Lexington St, New Britain)!  Join us for drinks, plenty of food, and the chance for short docent-led tours of the exhibits at NBMAA.  Getting to NBMAA is just a quick, 15-20 minute trip from Downtown Hartford.  And as with other Hartford "All-Ivy" events, alumni from all Ivy clubs in Greater Hartford are welcome, along with their guests!

Tickets are just $20 per person, and include the chance to see the exhibits at NBMAA (general museum admissions is usually $20 on its own) PLUS plenty of food for our group!  There will also be drinks available from a cash bar.  We expect lots of our alumni will register for this event, so claim your tickets before they're gone!

Should we need to reschedule this event due to wintry weather, details about rescheduling will be shared with registrants at least 24 hours before our event time on January 23rd.

There is no dress code for this event – simply come as you are after work on January 23rd for as much or as little time as your schedule allows.  You are welcome to bring guests, too!  (Just remember to buy tickets for them.)  Finally, for those who would like someone else to do the driving for this event, we're happy to help guests form small groups to share an Uber, Lyft, or other rideshare to or from NBMAA.

Once again, please claim your tickets early so we can make sure to save a spot for you and your guests for this event!

Please feel free to get in touch with any questions (info@yaleclubhartford.org).  We're excited to share belated toasts for a Happy New Year when we see you on January 23rd!

Days of Service at Thanksgiving 2024 - Thanksgiving Meals on Wheels

’Tis the season! And we have much for which to be thankful.  In this season of gratitude and festiveness, however, there are some among us - in our own community - who are in need.

As the Yale Club of Hartford considers additional ways to better engage with the Greater Hartford community where we live, work, pray and/or play, what better way to build community than by volunteering to help our neighbors.

Phillips Metropolitan CME Church continues this annual tradition in honor of the late Sister Lillian Graham, longstanding chair of the Board of Christian Education, whose idea it was to bring prepared meals to those in need, to seniors and to those first responders on duty away from their families on the Thanksgiving holiday.

Youth are welcomed to participate, but must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Please wear comfortable clothing and footwear with good traction, and please dress for the weather. Thanksgiving Meals On Wheels will happen RAIN, SNOW or SHINE on Thursday, November 28, 2024 from 8:00am - 12:00pm at Phillips Metropolitan C.M.E. Church at 2500 Main Street, Hartford. If you are unable to participate on Thanksgiving Day, there are options to help the day before with preparations and/or make a donation of turkeys, desserts or financial contribution.

Thank you in advance for your participation and/or support!

Days of Service at Thanksgiving 2024 - Pre-Thanksgiving Community Breakfast

Angel of Edgewood, Inc., and the African American Sub Commission of the CT Commission on Women, Children, Seniors, Equity & Opportunity will host their Annual Pre-Thanksgiving Community Breakfast on Wednesday, November 27th.

All are welcome!  At this event, Angel of Edgewood's volunteers, the Commission’s staff, along with U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal and U.S. Senator Chris Murphy, will gather to serve a hearty breakfast alongside our community leaders who care deeply about Hartford.  Whether you’d like to stay and chat or take your food to go, we’re here to help you start the Thanksgiving holiday week with warmth, gratitude, and community spirit.  This year’s event will be hosted at Dunkin’ Park at 1214 Main Street, Hartford in the Charter Oak Health Community Room. Click here for more info about parking options near Dunkin’ Park.

This breakfast not only provides a free hot meal to families who may otherwise go without, but it also serves as a unique opportunity to foster unity and mutual understanding. We firmly believe that building connections with citizens from diverse backgrounds is crucial in sparking positive and lasting change throughout our communities and state!

We are seeking volunteers to assist in serving meals, as well as distributing bags of groceries and free coats to ensure that families leave with more than just a hot breakfast. Your participation will make a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve. Volunteers are asked to arrive between 7:30 AM - 8:00 AM in order to be in position for serving meals at 9:00 AM.

Hartford “All-Ivy” Fall 2024 Vineyard Outing

Hartford “All-Ivy” Fall 2024 Vineyard Outing

There's still plenty of warm weather ahead – and our Hartford "All Ivy" community is looking forward to making the most of it!  As everyone returns from summer adventures, we're looking forward to getting everyone together in September for our next exciting event which – by popular demand – will be at one of Greater Hartford's quintessential vineyards!

On Thursday, September 19th from 5:30-8:00 PM, join us for after work drinks at Crystal Ridge Winery (257 Belltown Rd, South Glastonbury)!  For most, this should be a quick and scenic ~20 minute trip from Downtown Hartford along Route 2, allowing those interested to readily go from work to the vineyard and then home.  As with our spring social / mixer, alumni from all Ivy clubs in Greater Hartford are welcome, modeling the "All-Ivy" events often held in places like NYC, Boston, the Bay Area and beyond.

This event is FREE to attend!  Additionally, guests will be able to enjoy wine tastings and glasses of wine and craft beer for purchase from Crystal Ridge, as well as oven-fresh pizza from Burning Peel Pizza Truck, which will offer fresh pizzas for sale for those interested!  Charcuterie options and similar will also be available.

Naturally, we're hoping to enjoy the outdoors and the still-warm weather during our event, so we have planned a rain date just in case!  The rain date is a week later (9/26), with the same start and end times.  If it looks like the weather won't cooperate on the 19th, we'll send out an announcement a few days in advance, and we will make sure our RSVP'd guests in particular are made aware.

There is no dress code for this event – simply come as you are after work on September 19th for as much or as little time as your schedule allows.  You are welcome to bring guests, too.  Finally, for those who would like someone else to do the driving for this event, we'll help those interested find other event guests to share an Uber, Lyft, or other rideshare to or from Crystal Ridge.

We expect lots of interest in this event, so please RSVP as soon as you can (even if your plans are tentative!) so we can make sure we have you on our guest list!

Please feel free to get in touch with any questions about this event (info@yaleclubhartford.org).  We're excited to see you on September 19th and to welcome you back from summer!

Yale Day of Service 2024 - Spring Book Drive

On Saturday, May 11th (10 AM - 4 PM), we will once again accept donations of books for elementary and middle school students at our collection site, First Baptist Church of West Hartford (90 North Main Street, West Hartford).

Our focus is to gather books for young readers, grades 3 to 8.  Donated books will be contributed toward the Likoni Library Project, directed by Fulbright Scholar Nadja Umlauf ’22 and organized last year through Dwight Hall.  The Likoni Library Project strives to build mobile libraries for students in Kenya, and has already made a difference for thousands of students.  Click here to read more about the Likoni Library Project and Nadja’s work in support of it!

There are two easy ways to make a difference for our book drive (feel free to do either or both!):

  1. Drop-Off or Mail Your Books:  Donating your books is fast and easy!  Just drop-off or mail your books to the collection site, First Baptist Church of West Hartford, 90 North Main Street, West Hartford, CT 06107 on Saturday, May 11th, from 10 AM - 4 PM.  In the bag or box you use for drop-off or mailing, please include a note with your name and e-mail address so we can acknowledge your donation.  If mailing books, please address them “Attn: Yale Club of Hartford Book Drive”, and consider asking your Post Office about strongly-discounted Media Mail service for books.

  2. Contribute Toward the Cost of Shipping:  We still need funds to send the books we are collecting to the schools where they are needed.  For just $2 per book, you can help us ship a donated book to its final destination!  Click here to donate online toward the cost of shipping books for our book drive.

Will you be dropping-off books on May 11th?  Fill out the quick form linked here (takes less than 1 minute!) so we can make sure we have the right number of volunteers at our collection site at the right times. (Don’t worry, your RSVP is non-binding!)  And remember, you can also donate online toward the cost of shipping books for our book drive.

Questions?  Just e-mail us at hartford.yale.club@gmail.com and we’ll do our best to send you an answer soon after!

Thanks again for all the ways you choose to support our book drive this spring!

A very special guest is joining The Yale Club of Hartford for Feb Club tonight:  Sichan Siv, former United States Ambassador to the United Nations Economic and Social Council, will join our Feb Club event! Ambassador Siv was one of the first Club of Hartford Zoom speakers in 2022, and looks forward to visiting our group in-person, an opportunity not possible previously.  Ambassador Siv endured a harrowing growing up in Cambodia (read more here) before escaping and arriving into Tweed New Haven Airport with all his worldly possessions: his mother’s scarf, an empty rice bag, and two dollars. He has fond memories of Connecticut, where he began by picking apples in Wallingford and slinging ice cream in Middletown.

On Thanksgiving morning from 8:30 AM - 12:00 PM, we are seeking a cadre of YCH volunteers* to join members of the Phillips Metropolitan C.M.E. Church located at 2500 Main Street, Hartford for its Thanksgiving Meals on Wheels.  We will package and coordinate the delivery of Thanksgiving meals throughout the city of Hartford.  The activity finishes and is cleaned up by 12 PM Noon, in time for everyone to join their families for Thanksgiving dinner and football.

*Children aged 10 and older are welcome. Parent/guardian supervision is required.

Steve Gladstone Retirement Celebration

The Yale Heavyweight Crew will be rowing Saturday, June 10 along the Thames River near New London, CT in the 156th Yale Harvard Regatta, the oldest intercollegiate contest in the United States.  This will be an exciting contest given Yale's strong performance on May 14 at the Eastern Sprints Rowing Regatta in Worcester, MA.  The Yale Heavyweight Crew captured gold in the first and third-varsity grand finals, defeating Harvard who finished fourth in both events.  This was the seventh-straight year that the Yale first varsity finished first, and helped secure the Ivy League Championship.

This will also be Coach Steve Gladstone's final race as head coach of the Yale Heavyweight Crew.  He was recently named the Ivy League Coach of the year.  He was already regarded as one of the premier rowing coaches in the United States when he took over the Yale heavyweight crew in 2010, and he is now the most successful coach in IRA National Championships history, having won the last three with the Bulldogs.

The Yale Club of Hartford announces its
Award Sponsorship of

Connecticut Invention Convention (CIC) 2023 Finals

We Invite Yale Club of Hartford members To Serve as Judges For This Year’s Competition
March 31 - April 17

We invite you to join over 350 engineers, scientists, academics, entrepreneurs, and legal professionals who will judge student inventions and inspire young minds to pursue science and engineering.  We have a unique opportunity to sponsor and judge the regional virtual event of hundreds of Connecticut student inventors who have prepared to demonstrate their achievement in creative and critical thinking skills and their active role as inventors. The Yale Club of Hartford will select three inventors, representing an elementary, a middle, and a high school level.  The three Yale Club awards will be presented during an in-person finals event on Saturday, June 10 at the University of Connecticut.

Judge Registration

Registration to serve as a judge for this event is now open.  Judging takes between 2-3 hours over a period of two and a half weeks.  The judging period occurs March 31 through April 17. During that time, judges will review inventor videos, logbooks, and display slides, and score them based on a rubric. Each submission should take about 10 minutes to judge, and we hope you will consider judging at least 10 inventors. You may choose to judge more than 10 inventions if you have more time available.  Judges must be 18 years or older to register as a CIC judge.

Judge training webinars will be conducted for the judges. Dates, times, and more information to follow.

Registration Information (with updated link)

To register as a judge please click here or visit the Connecticut Invention Convention website by entering https://ctinventionconvention.org/judges-1 on your browser
AND
Please follow up with a separate email (see below).

Under "organization or employer" please enter "Yale Club of Hartford" so CIC can credit Team Yale Club of Hartford with supporting this event.  Participation with CIC judging is also counted as participation in Yale Day of Service.

Yale vs. Georgetown NCAA Tournament Lacrosse Watch Party

Today!
Yale vs. Georgetown Men's Lacrosse in the
NCAA Tournament First Round

Faceoff at 5 pm | Saturday, May 13
Live Broadcast | Tavern In The Square, West Hartford

Come and join fellow Yale alumni today, Saturday, May 13 at 5 pm at Tavern In The Square in West Hartford as we watch the Yale Men’s Lacrosse team take on the Georgetown Hoyas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.  The Bulldogs are ranked #9 and the Hoyas #5, but Yale leads the all-time series against Georgetown 9-0.  The game will be played at Georgetown in Washington, DC, and will be televised nationally on ESPNU.

Yale's road to the postseason has been far from easy. The Bulldogs dropped their first three Ivy League games before winning their final three, including a victory at Harvard in the regular season finale that earned them a spot in the Ivy League Tournament. Overall, Yale won six straight games before falling to Princeton in the championship game of the Ivy Tournament.

The last meeting between the Bulldogs and Hoyas was the 2019 first round NCAA Tournament game when Yale’s TD Ierlan set an NCAA Tourney record by winning 31 faceoffs.  Yale ultimately edged Georgetown 19-16 for the win.  That victory sparked a tournament run that didn't end until the NCAA National Championship game in Philadelphia where Yale ultimately fell to Virginia.

Faceoff is at 5 pm on Saturday, May 13.  We will have plenty of seats at Tavern In The Square in Corbin's Corner, West Hartford, near REI and Shake Shack.  The restaurant has several large screen TVs for viewing the game.  There will be no cover charge, but everyone will order their own food and drinks.  We hope to see you there at 5 pm on Saturday!

West Hartford's Emergency Management and Fire Department

We Invite Yale Club of Hartford members
To Serve as Actors in a
Disaster Simulation Drill

Saturday, May 13
9 am - 2 pm

Conard High School
West Hartford, CT

We invite you to join us as we assist the West Hartford Fire Department and West Hartford Office of Emergency Management as they conduct the largest, full-scale disaster drill in the town’s history.  The drill will help the Town of West Hartford prepare for its role as a “Host Community” for residents who live near the Millstone Power Plant in the event of a nuclear accident near New London, CT.

The scenario for the drill is to activate West Hartford's Emergency Shelter at Conard High School and be ready to receive and process residents of Montville and Waterford.  These simulated “residents” will be asked to evacuate due to an incident at the Millstone Nuclear Power Plant in Waterford near New London.  West Hartford’s role is to scan simulated “evacuees”, their vehicles, and their pets for hazardous particles and then provide assistance, counseling, and placement services, if needed.

The State of CT and the Town of West Hartford need additional actors to play various roles for the exercise. Volunteers will receive just-in-time training.  Representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be onsite and evaluating the exercise.

The simulation exercise will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2023, from 9 am - 2 pm at Conard High School, 110 Beechwood Rd, West Hartford, CT 06107.  If interested, please contact Katherine McCormack at kmccormack@aya.yale.edu for more details.
