Yale Women’s Gymnastics Coach Barbara Tonry
Yale coaches Andy Shay (Men’s Lacrosse) and Barbara Tonry (Women’s Gymnastics) will be featured speakers at the Yale Club of Hartford’s Bob Haller Memorial Sports Night at the Hartford Golf Club on Thursday, January 30. The Club will also present the C. Gilbert Shepard Award to two outstanding Yale undergrads from Greater Hartford.
Barbara Galleher Tonry has coached the Yale women's gymnastics team since its inception in 1973 and has made it one of the most successful teams in the history of Yale athletics. Tonry's teams have captured 16 Ivy Classic championships since the first league meet in 1977. In 2017, she led the Bulldogs to their first-ever Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship title, winning the ECAC Coach of the Year Award in the process. In 2018, she led the Bulldogs to back-to-back ECAC titles as well as her 15th Ivy Classic Title. She was named USAG Collegiate National Head Coach of the Year. Under Tonry’s leadership in 2019, the Yale Gymnastics team took home its 16th Ivy Classic team title, earning the team’s second consecutive Ivy crown. Additionally, the team made 39 additions to Yale’s top 10 lists. She and her late husband, Don, an Olympian and NCAA champion gymnast, wrote the Sports Illustrated Guide to Gymnastics. Barbara is a 1961 graduate of North Texas and holds a master’s degree from Southern Connecticut.
Andy Shay has coached the Yale men’s lacrosse team for 16 seasons. The last 10 seasons have been historic. The Bulldogs have gone 118-44 (.728) with nine 10-win seasons, including the 2018 national championship. Shay is a 1994 graduate of Le Moyne College where he was a four-year starting defenseman and served as team captain for two years. He was an All-Empire League selection as a senior when he led the team to a league title. Shay, the 2017 Ivy League Coach of the Year, has also directed the Bulldogs to 10 straight Ivy League Tournament appearances, five Ivy tournament titles, three regular-season Ivy League championships and seven NCAA appearances, including Yale’s first in 20 years.
